BQ: Playing with Blocks - The beginner Quilt



"Playing with Blocks - The Beginner Quilt" is for the beginner quilter. Whether you are just starting out, or want to hone your skills, this class is for you. 

This class will cover the basics of block piecing, from the simple on up. Class will learn how to piece nine different blocks using 5 foundation pieces, and will see how these foundation blocks can be slightly changed to create a totally different look.

Classes will run 4 weeks for 2 hours each week. Class 1, 2 and 3 will work on basic sewing knowledge needed to read and understand patterns, and how to cut and piece different blocks. Class 4 will work on final assembly and piecing the quilt top. Quilt size - approximately 52" x 52".

Class cost will cover the material needed for the quilt top, pattern/class handouts and instructional time. Additional purchase of material for backing, binding and batting will be necessary to complete your quilt.

Sign up is available in store, or on the website. Supplies will need to be brought to class.

Needed Supplies/Tools for class:

  • Scissors and rotary cutter
  • Cutting Mat - minimum size 9x12, but 12x18 preferred (self-healing is best)
  • Straight edge ruler/Template - 2 1/2" x 12
  • Marking Pen/Pencil
  • Seam Ripper
  • Snips - optional
  • Sewing Machine*
  • Matching Thread - 1 spool of white is sufficient for project
  • Ziplock bags and small Post-it note pad
  • Small fabric clips
  • Sewing Pins

Students who purchase needed supplies at our store will receive a 10% off discount on their purchase. All students will also recieve a 10% off discount if purchasing their backing, and binding from Conover Quilt Company, and a coupon towards 10% off longarm services to complete the quilt. 

*Students with machines should bring their machine if at all possible. There will be a limited amount of classroom machines available for those that do not have a machine. 


Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: Students should be able to follow and read directions to create their beginner quilt. Students will be utilizing scissors, pins and rotary cutters, which are sharp and should exercise caution when handling these tools. Measuring and understanding measurements will be used throughout the project.
Materials Included: 4.3 yards fabric - 3 yards of selected fabrics for blocks, 1.3 yards fabrics for block and outer framing
Requirements: Scissors, Rotary Cutter and Snips (snips are optional, but handy) Cutting Mat - Minimum 9x12, but 12x18 prefferred (self-healing is best) Straight Edge Ruler/Template - 2 1/2" x 12 Marking Pen/Pencil Seam Ripper Matching Thread - 1 spool of White is sufficient for project - General Purpose Ziplock Bags and small Post-it note pad - for marking and keeping blocks separate Small fabric clips Sewing Pins

Instructor Bio: Nancy is a co-owner of Conover Quilt Company. She began sewing at an early age and moved into quilting approximately 15 years ago. After a break from sewing to finish raising her kids and to go back to college for her degree, Nancy returned to quilting and enjoys the creativity it provides.
